Great option for vegetarian traditional Japanese meal! I got the set meal and had plenty of food. (We got more dishes after I took this picture)
One of our best meals in Japan. Fresh and tasty with both vegetarian and meat options. Salad was great and welcome after going awhile without. Place is small with tight quarters.
Great restaurant if you’re looking for vegetarian options! The staff is also very nice!
Ok experience at biotei, table was small and low, it was a bit uncomfortable. Food was ok, not mind-blowing. We went there as we felt our body was in need of vegetables and there was a lot which was good. Service is a bit slow since there is single waitress and one cook. If you feel your body needs raw vegetables and you cannot find vegetarian food around, it's a good place.
Yummy vegan food!
Biotei is a calm and small restaurant on the 2nd floor. It's vegetarian and vegan-friendly, while also offering some meat dishes, which can be good if you want to go there with your friends. They are nice and friendly people, tourists as well as locals eat here, the air is filled with the smell of the food and in the background a radio is playing calm classic-american songs from the last centuries. We've been there two times and the food is awesome! If I ever go to Kyoto again, I will definitely eat here again! Next to the restaurant, there is also a french-style bakery, which is also opened in the evenings, so you can go there for a dessert. Biotei is also offering some desserts, a cake which changes from day to day, but it's sold out sometimes.Love this place!
Long wait for a seat, for the food. BUT, it's totally worth it. The food tastes really good. Prepared by an old lady with love. It's a small restaurant, but kinda cosy.
I understand that for tourist coming to visit Japan this place can looks very attractive, but if you are an expat living here and you speak Japanese and know about Japanese food, you just understand that this place use pretty much cheap product and 90% of their menu are cheap meat based dishes. Staff also don`t like foreign speaking Japanese. My Japanese partner was shocked too how the treat us when we asked if it was possible to have the vegan lunch. Just rude and unpolite. Go just if you area tourist!
Cosy and delicious
Cosy restaurant with extremely welcoming staff! They have both vegetarian and meat dishes.
Small restaurant on the first floor. There is an English menu, however the choices are limited if you don't want very healthy food. We had roasted chicken and that tasted good. Pity that it came with just one potato.
Very well received. Small place. Quality dishes and healthy ingredients. Nice ambience.
No comment for the food...cause we waited for 20min and no one come to take the order! we had to leave as I was starving...You'd better to try when you are not hungry.
Great vegetarian option in Kyoto! The service is friendly and the food is really tasty. The sake is so good too. Recommended.
Best food I ate in Kyōto. The place is small but cozy and the staff is very friendly . Ideal for vegan/ vegetarians. Not only the food was great but the sake was also delicious. Definitely recommend this place .
Good veggie options for an ok price. They have an English menu. Good atmosphere as you can sit directly in front of the open kitchen.
It’s cute. It’s granola. Perfect if you want a wholesome healthy bite while in Kyoto.
Totally overated fully touristic restaurant , food is nothing more than ok minus
A cozy little restaurant up a spiral staircase, catty corner from the Museum of Kyoto. The food was delicious, filling, simple, satisfying fare. We had the dinner set; the shiraae was to die for!
If you like your food organic then this is the place to go. Vegetarian and vegan options but also meat and fish. Everything made in front of you. Also Japanese wine and fruit sake. Not certain why this is described as Western in the header unless it is the nice salads they prepare.
Good option when you have a vegan/vegetarian in your group. Cozy and snug restaurant on the 2nd floor. I ordered the chicken and it was probably the biggest serving of chicken I've ever received! It was well seasoned and tender. I really enjoyed the hot chocolate, which was comparable to Ghiradelli's chocolate drink (thick & dark).
Make sure you make reservation!! I’m with my 65 year old parents who are vegetarians, we walked almost 25 mins here only to release they were totally full and not accepting walk in anymore. It’s so hard to fine vegetarian food in JP. 😞
Quaint and cozy second floor restaurant. Staff is friendly and food is great. Although they have meat options they do have to plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. They have an extensive drink menu (try the home made sake) as well as seasonal lunch and dinner specials. Service can be a bit slow if it’s busy, which it seems to be for dinner anyways.
It was absolutely amazing! Such a charming place with the most delicious home cooked, healthy food! The produce was so fresh and delicious!
Really tasty and cheap lunch option. Tried both the vegetarian and non vegetarian option. Both were great, and had a nice cold beer to wash it all down. Very quick service and friendly staff
FYI - this place is closed for vacation until September 2, 2019. Do not go here until after then.
Interesting place... food was ok, but i wouldn`t go twice...
kind service, simple good food, perfect when sick of oily food
Excellent vegan meals! A bit small and can be hard to find. Biotei is a little Japanese restaurant near Nishiki Market that serves vegan and vegetarian food that is completely organic at its origin. The Vegan set meal was one of the best healthy and flavorful meals I had in a long time. Hot miso soup, fresh salad with lemon dressing, silken tofu with fresh peppercorn broth and brown rice. The #natto omelette is a traditional Japanese fermenented soy product and while it has a very unique taste it does have the mouthfeel of a regular omelette
My husband and I came across this Biotei for dinner after getting my nails done. They have several vegetarian options without the 5 pungent spices (onions, garlic, leeks, etc.). I loved the fermented bean tofu dumpling and the rice noodle side dish. We also ordered a hotpot and omelette, and they were super delicious too!
Amazing small restaurant (seats ~20-25) with a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. You could easily miss it walking through the streets as the sign is small and it is on the second floor. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and friendly.
Such a great find - excellent, healthy vegetarian food with some seafood and meat options too. Small space and cosy atmosphere - don't hesitate to try it!
We came here because of the reviews. It is great food and plenty of vegetarian options which isn’t so common in Japan. The spring roll was great. Recommend a visit if you are in Kyoto.
Very Cosy and relaxing atmosphere. The food was very good. Organic and vegan menus.
Our favourite restaurant in Kyoto- a gorgeous place, with wonderful (?mother and daughter) team working between the tables and kitchen, the most delicious home made food with organic produce and warming meals, cannot recommend it highly enough!! Bonus- able to accomodate for a gluten free meal (for coeliac) perfectly- had a chicken and tofu hot pot which was superb! Do yourself a favour and visit this family run restaurant, you will not regret it!!
This delightful restaurant is nestled on the 2nd story and requires you to walk up winding stairs. Upon entry you are greeted by a tiny wooden shop house with a cozy atmosphere. The lunch menu set was absolutely amazing and all meals can be made vegan or vegetarian too. What a delightful place to eat with great value.
Had the seaweed salad, veg miso soup, hot ginger and plum wine. All of it was delish.
Being a vegetarian isn’t always easy in Japan. In fact, it can be quite a struggle. Biomei was a real gem, catering primarily to veggies and vegans. The best part is that they retain an authentic Japanese edge to their cuisine, such as tofu steaks or soybean croquettes. Highly recommend.
A lovely cosy atmosphere and delicious vegan food - fresh and pure. I loved it here and would definitely go back were I to be in Kyoto again.
Fresh, healthy, delicious food in Kyoto! It's a small place with 20 or so seats and it feels like eating in a family house. Can't recommend this place enough! Fantastic for vegetarians.
Lovely little spot! Food is perfect and healthy, and the staff make everyone feel welcome. Very cozy lunch on a rainy day in Kyoto.
Great place and lovely food - very friendly.
Lovely atmosphere in this homely and honest restaurant. Amazing food. Small space so expect a little bit of a wait for a table, but worth it. An Australian family arrived mid meal and spoke really demeaningly to their child at the table beside us but it still could not have ruined our meal! Recommended as essential eating for visiting Kyoto.
Extremely fresh vegetables and amazing tofu. Everything was prepared exquisitely by the chef and the atmosphere is very cozy. Would certainly recommend stopping in for a light but delicious meal.
Very friendly chef
Quaint vegan restaurant with great service. Food is very good and prices reasonable.
Super nice place with a lot options for both vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters
Loved the food. Tasty vegan food in Kyoto
Best organic food in Kyoto 🙏
This meal was deeply nostalgic, and made me feel like I was eating at home, even though it was a Japanese meal, and I'm from Oregon. So fun!
